Hi, I'm Daniel Felipe López Escobar 👋

Mechatronics Engineer from Bogotá, Colombia. I design, build, and program open-source mobile robots end-to-end with ROS 2 — from CAD and embedded firmware to simulation and HRI interfaces. I also care deeply about building the robotics community in Latin America.

🤖 Featured Projects

Low-cost differential robot (~$300 USD) designed as an open-source academic platform for experimental robotics. Built on ROS 2 Humble, RPi 4 + Arduino Uno. Integrates ros2_control, URDF/Xacro, Gazebo Classic simulation, and SLAM impelmentation with slam_toolbox. Used as a hands-on teaching platform in community workshops.

ORION — Open-source Robot for Interaction Objectives and Navigation

Low-cost differential robot (~$850 USD) designed for HRI research and experimentation. Built on ROS 2 Jazzy, RPi 4/5, with micro-ROS on ESP32 for embedded control. Features a full voice pipeline (STT → LLM → TTS), SLAM with slam_toolbox and cartographer, and simulation in Gazebo Harmonic.

🌎 Community

IEEE RAS Javeriana Student Chapter

Led the chapter for 5 semesters as President (Jul 2022 - Jan 2025), growing it into an active community of 50+ members across multiple engineering disciplines. Built and mentored a structured ROS 2 learning path from scratch (covering Linux, Git, Python, ROS 2 fundamentals, URDF, Gazebo, and SLAM) and launched two open-source robot projects (DiffDan and ORION) as community platforms. Also, supported and participated in local community iniatives for robotics.

Co-organizer of the ROS MeetUp series in Colombia — bringing together the local ROS/ROS 2 community for talks, workshops, and demos.
